Olivia went back into her room, wondering what the hell had happened. How had she let herself get so needy? And what had she needed? Talking about her father brought all her feelings of inadequacy to the surface. Was she looking for proof that somebody could actually like her?

But had he really been liking her? Or the fact she was female? Her father’s voice returned. All she was good for was being a wife. A man’s possession. Was that what Hotshot had wanted? Not her as a wife, of course, but to possess her?

Men and their sex drives. Always taking over.

But he hadn’t taken over. He’d backed off. And what would have happened if he hadn’t? Sleeping with a co-worker was never a good idea, especially one you barely knew. Sleeping with anyone you barely knew was stupid. Mega-stupid. Sure, they’d talked over dinner, but all superficial stuff. She could tell he hadn’t opened his internal barriers, and neither had she.

But damn, it felt good when she was near him. Everything seemed … lighter. Would a quick fling be so bad? After all, when this job was over, they’d go their separate ways. Not like having to face him in the office the next day, every day.

She brushed her teeth—good dental hygiene, not because she’d sampled his garlic shrimp. Her book no longer tempted her. Nothing good on TV. And Hotshot was right. As his caregiver, she had every reason to be downstairs with him.

Before leaving, she made sure she had her badge and room key, then dashed toward the stairway. And almost collided with someone outside her door. A Studly. She looked more closely. The one from the infirmary. “Sorry.”

He blocked her path. “Come with me.”

“Come with you where?” What was he doing? She looked down the hall, but it was empty. Not a Babe or another Studly in sight.

“You’ll see,” he said. “Let’s go.”

She planted her feet. “Not until you tell me what’s going on.”

“No time. We need to hurry.” He gripped her arm, twisted it behind her back. “Let’s not call any attention to ourselves, now. Wouldn’t want to have to hurt you.”

“What are you doing? Who are you?” She tried to wrench her arm free, but he grabbed her other arm as well.

“My name’s not important. If you’ll come with me … quietly … I’ll explain,” he said.

“Explain now.” But the man spun her around, led her away from the main staircase, to a door marked Staff Only.

He used his key card and the door revealed a dark, narrow staircase. He gave her a gentle nudge. “Inside, please. I’m not going to hurt you. I need a private place to talk, that’s all.”

He’d lessened his grip, although he still held her hands. Did he think she’d fight him? She almost laughed. Of course she would. He had to know that with her training as a P.A., she’d be strong. Or did he think she was used to taking orders from clients, and did what people told her to do? However, confronting anyone in a narrow, dark stairwell wasn’t smart.
